World Food Day Public Forum

End Date: 10/16/2017End Time: 4:30 PM
Event Description
To mark this year’s World Food Day (October 16), Indianapolis citizens will have an opportunity to hear from two leading international experts on the role of farming as a means to address hunger issues. This conversation is especially important as global hunger is on the rise and four countries are experiencing famine. Event organizers believe that hope is found whenever women farmers are given a chance to lead.
The gathering will be held at 3:00 – 4:30 pm in the conference center of the IMG Building, 2960 N. Meridian Street, Indianapolis.
Monica Maigari has organized her community in Kaduna province, Nigeria to overcome a myriad of challenges in one of the world's least food-secure countries. After rising to national attention through her success as a farmer and women's advocate, Mrs. Maigari was awarded the title Nigerian Female Food Hero for 2014 by the human rights organization Oxfam. Since then, she has been in demand as a public speaker at national and international levels.
Gina Sheets is a Sagamore Institute Senior Fellow and former Director of the Indiana State Department of Agriculture. After leaving her position with the state of Indiana in 2014, Sheets moved with her husband to Liberia where they worked with farmers. She holds leadership positions with Hope in the Harvest Missions International and the Liberia International Christian College.
Former Lt. Gov. Kathy Davis, Oxfam America Sisters on the Planet Ambassador, will serve as host for the gathering.
Through academic, agricultural, corporate, and political leadership, the state of Indiana has long had an outsized role in international agricultural development. This World Food Day conversation will help shape discussions on Indiana's ongoing role by celebrating the power of women farmers.
Event Organizers:
The Sagamore Institute is an action-oriented think tank headquartered in Indianapolis. They seek to deliver innovative and commonsense solutions to today’s greatest challenges through a network of citizen leaders at home and abroad.

Free parking is available in the gated lot at the corner of Illinois Street and 30th. Light refreshments will be served.
